Montgomery Women's Facility opened in March 1976 with a capacity for 128 community custody inmates received from Red Eagle Honor Farm. The Center consisted of eight trailers housing 16 inmates each, a dining hall, an administrative trailer and a trailer for the director’s residence. On August 12, 1986, the director’s dwelling was converted to a segregated dormitory with a capacity for 12 female inmates. The capacities of the male trailers were also increased for 18 inmates each, which increased the total capacity to 156 inmates.

On July 13, 1989, new buildings were opened, which consisted of a male dormitory with a capacity for 180 male inmates, a dining and administrative building, and a supply area. The Center’s capacity increased to 192 inmates. On March 15, 1990, two modular buildings, constructed by Alabama Correctional Industries, opened to accommodate 24 female inmates and a recreation area. The facility capacity grew to 204 inmates, 180 males and 24 females. In January 1991, a visiting pavilion, a supply/storage building, and a hobby craft/classroom building were opened.

Montgomery Women's Facility is located behind Kilby Correctional Facility on Wares Ferry Road. The Center is convenient to Montgomery’s job market where the inmates work full time jobs in the community and return to the facility after work.
